Analyzing the Current Meta: are GP10’s really worth it?
When analyzing the current meta, one must take into account the most variables possible.
We’ve all seen the proliferation of GP10’s in our current meta. These items are critical in a support champions for reasons we already know and I won’t mention. But I wondered about these items being utilized in other lanes and champions, and wondered if this is really the best way to build champions in both our current meta and the average game length in LOL.
In professional matches the average game length runs about 40-55 mins, and Riot states that the average match in the ENTIRETY of LOL ranges at about 30-40 mins. While these numbers are great for talking generalities, they are terrible when trying to figure out exact data. I spent a whole week analyzing different elo play times, and came up with some interesting numbers.
Lower elo play (<1200): average game length (43 games observed) 23mins
Mid elo (>1200-<1800): average game length (31 games observed) 26mins
Upper mid elo (>1800-<2400): average game length (39 games observed) 35mins
I will include a nifty table about the cost effectiveness of GP10 items, and their time to payoff.
So, taking this into consideration and the average length times that were observed in ranked matches, it stands to reason that for Top lane and Mid lane, GP10’s are NOT worth it for the average game lengths observed.
GP10 items build into some great items (Shurelyia’s, Randuin’s, DG). But maybe, starting to build a mid game item early would benefit both Top lane and Mid lane better. Rushing mid game items or even building toward those late game items would allow players to have a HUGE advantage over the team who goes for the “lategame” build and goes for GP10’s.
Not to say that these items are bad, don’t get me wrong. But it stands to reason that in lower levels of elo people tend to do 1 thing constantly:
Play very aggressively
Now I should ask of couple of things
1) Is your team built around a late game?
2) Is the champion you chose better in the late game?
3) Are you incompetent in acquiring CS?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then maybe you should consider the GP10 build, but then again maybe your elo isn’t in the lower tier if you’re aware of all these prior conditions.
In summary:
Higher elo games go on for longer periods of time, so they benefit from GP10 items a lot more than lower elo games, due to the brevity (aggressiveness) of them. Build for early –mid games in lower elo, and stomp those players that build for “late game”.

As a response to the table, I think that you can’t really put a ‘time to pay off’ as none of those items give only GP10. You should also consider how useful the item will be on your champion. As a support the extra HP/Mana regen will be useful as you have little gold as it is, you don’t really need to go around buying potions to avoid going OOM or having to heal yourself or go back. I play mainly support so that’s where i have most of my experience, but the extra gold you get from there is good to buy wards and being the kind of person who does the ’0 CS support’ quite often i don’t see much gold during the game.
P.S: my ELO is around 1.2k

I agree with Daingrak’s reply… but I think the guy addressed the issue more along the line of top and mid… he clearly states they are critical items in supports.

While i know the OP was not addressing supports specifically, that’s where most of my experience comes from, as i never get any GP10 items on my mid champions (my mana regen comes from the single doran’s i pick up on my first recall or just learning how to work my way around my own mana pool), so i can’t talk about this, and my top is less than decent so i wouldn’t count my own opinion in for this subject (i don’t get GP10 here either though)

As the posters above me said – Consider the values of the gp/10 segment after seeing how much gold you spend on other stats. After doing so, the gp/10 section of the item pays for itself after a staggeringly short time (don’t know exacts, think it is around 5-7 minutes.) However, I think this is a point for every lane (and the jungle) not just the support. I often take a philo stone on my bruiser tops that utilize mana, particularly if they have no built in sustain. Rushing a phage/bf/etc won’t help me as much if I have to recall constantly or have no mana to utilize abilities. I can’t speak for mid/jungle as much, I don’t play them nearly as often or as well as I do top, support, or adc – but the same principle applies, I would assume.
Just my 2 gold on the subject, but I think the gold/10 meta is popular right now for a reason.

Isn’t the “time to pay off” based on recipe cost, not the total item cost? As an example, Avarice Blade is about 350g for recipe. It also shoots the crit chance from 8% to 12%. Mathematically, that’s 50% more stats. I think the base item is 400g, putting the value at 600g. So for 150g more, you get 5gp10. That’s pretty good. Pays off in 5 minutes.
Yatdu replied on Jul 30th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
You’re supposed to sell those items at one point, which gives you back 70% of the initial prise.
So if you buy Avarice Blade you have made a profit of 525 gold after 25 minutes.

Incorrect, Yatdu.
Selling back GP10 items specifically refunds 50% of the price, not 70%.
This only applies to the four GP10 items and the Doran’s items.
